a whole new world

So much has changed since my last update. I was living in brockton, in the process of getting a divorce, and working as an emt when I got a new partner on Fridays. His name was Ryan and he seemed very nice.

So much has changed

So much has changed...where do I start? First things first, a quick update on the home front. Justin and I separated in March of 2016. I had a beautiful baby boy, Garrett Lee, on April 14, 2016. He is wonderful. He is now 20 months old. He is so sweet and kind and he makes me smile everyday. He has some sensory processing issues, early intervention has been wonderful helping me understand and work with Garrett. He is slowly working towards walking. He can get around great with a walker at group and individual therapy. Just struggling with doing it on his own!  Reagan Elizabeth is four years old and is an amazing young girl. She is compassionate, dramatic, funny, smart, and beautiful. She is very emotional and wears her heart on her sleeve.  I'm trying to instill healthy eating habits with them.  It's so hard. Life is busy and sometimes we end up eating cereal out of a baggy on the way to school. Sometimes we end up grabbing fast food because it's convenient. However, I try and have them eat at a manageable time and at the table most nights. No tablets or cell phones while eating and I try and limit the eating in front of the tv. Mindful eating is huge for me. My ten year wls anniversary came and went on December 11th. I can't believe it's been 10 years. Seems like just yesterday I was sitting on my parent's couch yelling/crying to my mom, "I don't like cottage cheese!" Ugh. Those were the days where you had to chew everything 30+ times before swallowing. I've come a long way. I plan on making an appointment to see my medical doctor at the weight center at MGH after the new year. I need to have bloodwork done. I am keeping a good eye on it with my pcp (she's known me for 15 years) and my hematologist. I had to have IV iron last summer (2016) because I was so low after having Garrett. I feel very good now and I have a plan of going on a weight loss challenge in January with some friends. I'd love to lose some weight and I have an idea of where I'd ultimately like to be, but if I lost 30 lbs I'd be ecstatic! Things right now are great, wls is still the best decision I ever made. I can't even imagine where I would be without it!

me and my girl

a much needed update

So...I've been absent.  For good reason! After my plastic surgery in 2009 I hit the dating scene. After dating a few duds, I met Justin Buckley, a cute ginger, online. We met in August 2009, got engaged in July 2010, and married in October 2011. I had our daughter,  Reagan, in July of 2013 and I'm pregnant with a boy who's due in April 2016. It's been a crazy 6 years! I am currently on maternity leave, but after staying home with Reagan for her first year and a half, I started work as an emt in the city of Brockton.  I love my job and the people I work with. I also still watch Aiden and Annabelle on Fridays for my boss Rebecca and Amir. I am currently at 240 lbs and after I have this kiddo will kick it into gear and get back to my ideal weight which was right around 190 lbs. I was a 10/12 and felt great. Life has been good and my family is all happy and healthy, I'm feeling blessed. Feel free to contact me at buckleyware@gmail.com

plastic surgery upate!!!

omg. it's been too long, i know. so for the update...

my surgery was rescheduled for june 25th at mass general hospital (MGH) because my plastic surgeon (dr. catherine hertl) wanted to do the surgery in the "big" OR. that was a little daunting! so the outcome of the plastic surgery way exceeded my expectations! however the actual surgery and recovery were much more than i expected.

to summarize the surgery was uneventful for me! it was a long day for my doctors...they took about 10 hours to complete my lower body lift. i had a tummy tuck, inner thigh lift, and a buttock lift. my insurance helped out with the tummy tuck, but i had to pay the rest. my doctor's office was extremely helpful in assisting with the insurance. the pre op and OR staff were exceptional! they were funny and compassionate and put me at ease right away. i was parked outside the OR, just like my bypass surgery, watching them setup for my surgery. I met the OR team that would take care of me. Everyone was awesome! My nurse anesthetist and nurse actually came up to my room on the post op floor the next day to check up on me. highly unusual. also the chief resident (simon) working on my case with dr. hertl was asked to do so by my boss. my boss is a plastic surgeon who worked with dr. hertl and the chief resident at MGH during his own residency. i am really glad that my boss was able to ask simon to work on my case. i am sure he learned a lot from working with dr. hertl because she has specific things that she does differently from other surgeons because of her experience. while they were marking me there was some discussion on different techniques!

i woke up from the surgery during the night. apparently (according to my mom) they brought me to my room really late june 25th. i was still out while my parents visited me that night. i woke up in pain immediately. it was pretty intense. i wasn't able to sleep well until over 2 weeks after surgery. i got the nurse to remove my catheter right away and help me to stand after surgery. i wanted to get to the bathroom as soon as i could. i remember from the last surgery the catheter was awful and i had that same sensation and i wanted to pee! i can't explain it...i guess my bladder doesn't agree well with the cath. anyway, i stood up and thought i was going to die. the pain was unexplainable and crazy. i wasn't on my pain pump because i learned at my last surgery that i and morphine do not get along. so i was taking 2 percocets every 4 hours. by the time i got to the bathroom it was hours later and a nurse change! my mom was there by now and when i got the bathroom i was completely in shock by what i saw. there were stitches in areas i did not expect. the inner thigh lift did not go down my thigh at all. it was all located in my groin. OMG. so awesome now because my legs look awesome and the incisions are hidden in my underwear line, but awful then because the pain from the heavy black stitches was unbearable! those stitches were not removed for over three weeks and they hurt all three weeks. after they were removed it was immediate relief. dr. hertl told me she had to bury the stitches deep into my leg close to the bone because they needed a good anchor to keep the thigh lifted. the stitches for the tummy tuck and butock lift went all the way arouond my abdomen and into my butt crack. i also had a vertical line from breasts to belly button to remove more skin. i'm about to disclose some personal information and male readers may want to skip to the next paragraph! i went into the surgery with my period just starting. it was early of course, typical. well when i woke up from the surgery and stood up for the first time it was like i turned on the faucet. AWFUL!!! i wasn't fully expecting or aware of the stitches in my groin area so when i went to the bathroom and felt the stitches and saw the blood i freaked out. cut to my nurse, andrea, checking me to make sure the blood wasn't coming from the incisions. seriously she deserves an award for what she had to do for me! it was awesome that i had such support from the nursing staff. she in particular was so so helpful and i can't say enough good things about her/them.

i stayed an extra day in the hospital because i could according to my insurance and everyone thought i should stay. dr. hertl, simon (the resident) with all the residents on their rounds, and the OR staff all came to check on me. i thought it was awesome. i had several breakdowns in the hospital because of pain and anxiety and the staff was great at helping with that. also dr. hertl had prepared myself and more importantly my mom for the anxiety and emotions...and she had given me medicine for that. it was very helpful and i recommend having some anti-anxiety meds nearby if your doctor agrees!

i stayed with my parents for three weeks; on their couch and then gradually to my old bedroom upstairs. my mom basically kept me from going insane and she might have gone semi insane herself in the process. she had to change my dressings everyday and monitor my drainage. dr. hertl removed the drains on my first post op appt after 6 days which was great because those things were just annoying. not a big deal removing them...just felt funny. they were buried much deeper than the bypass drains so let's just say they just kept coming and coming when they were pulling. it makes me weak in the knees just thinking about it! LOL

dr. hertl took out my stitches in my groin at three weeks post op. that was a little painful but immediately an improvement!!! at three weeks is kinda where i turned a corner. i took less painkillers and moved back to my apt. it was around week 4 where i felt like myself and week 5 where i could do anything but lift heavy objects.

the only "complication" that i had was a mild infection/skin irritation at one of my drain sites. i had to keep the sites covered with a bandaid and ointment and my skin just broke down from the bandaids...dr. hertl gave me some cream to put on the spot and instructions to discontinue the bandaids! LOL. apparently that is awesome for complication rates, since this surgery can have many complications!

i have pictures of the actual surgery (yes i know i am crazy) and am willing to answer any questions. feel free to email me directly at rachaeldstewart@gmail.com

big news people!

big update! to date i have lost 106 lbs! i was stuck in the 90's for a few weeks and i was very discouraged. i guess that's why i didn't write for a while. last monday, patriots day, i went downtown with aiden and our friends, lizzie, owen, and josh to all the marathon hoopla. we parked about a mile a way from the finish line and seriously walked about 10 miles that day. we walked for hours. we went all around, and some streets we couldn't go down because it was roped off even for pedestrians and we would have to go around the whole block. sounds easy, but for the former rachael i would have never done something like this. however, i think that this is one of the reasons that i lost more weight and got over the plateau i was on for weeks. i told lizzie that i want her to be my personal trainer! LOL

i went to a wedding this weekend and had fun. it felt nice to be told i was looking good by people that hadn't seen me in a while...real nice!

till next time :)

lil update :)

so here i am, getting ready to go to my "lifestyle nutrition" group at MGH. this is a group that i am required to go to every other week for 6 sessions. they tell me that this class/group will be a support and teaching took for myself for the rest of my life! i will fill you in on more after i attend.

so i haven't heard anything back from the doctor's office regarding my labs that i took last week, but at the office visit i was reading 89 lbs on their scale. this morning i weighed myself and i was at 93 lbs lost! almost to my 100 lb mark! can u believe it? i am also only 5 lbs away from weighing what i did my senior year in high school. fricking awesome!

i still try to stay away from chicken, it feels like it gets stuck! i tend to go for moister protein choices.

till next time :)

hi :)

so i am now 89 lbs down! that brings my average close to losing a pound a day! it's been really good so far, since surgery. my back pain is much better since i have been getting massages. the doctor's say that the weight loss changes everything and can cause muscle and general pain in some areas! who knew?? i am eating pretty much everything now, but i stay away from anything with sugar in it. only fake sugar for me (splenda, etc). also no alcohol and caffeine for 3 more months. they tell you to stay off of both for at least 6 months post op.

work is going well, and i have big news!!! i have enrolled to take classes at northeastern univ. i am going to attempt to take public health and nutrition. they are sort of an intro to NEU's health science program. health science is for anyone wanting to go into the health field. (nurses, pre-med, etc.) i am really excited!!

peace for now :)
